I am SO excited to announce a brand new feature coming to the blog – the ALOHA SERIES! Each month, I’ll introduce a new creative, inspiring babe.
I’m kicking off the series with mega art guru Sarah Caudle! Her resin pieces are gorgeous and I caught up with her to find out more about her inspiration.
WHERE DO YOU CALL HOME?
Many people tell me how lucky I am to live in such an inspiring place, and while I do consider myself fortunate, it is not luck that brought me here. Born and raised in Atlanta, GA I have always been drawn to the ocean, which is what led me to make the move to Honolulu, Hawaii. I packed up my life in 3 suitcases and moved halfway across the world to a little island in the middle of the sea. Although it has not always been easy living so far away from family, friends, and where I once called home, Hawaii has become my home. I am grateful to experience living on these magical islands, reflect my experiences through my art, and have my amazing boyfriend stick by my side on this crazy adventure!
The saying “home is where the heart is” lives true with my life. No matter where I am living, as long as I am with people that I love, in a place that I love, and doing what I love, I will feel at home.
RESIN PAINTING IS SUCH A UNIQUE ART FORM, HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INTO IT?
With a passion for the arts and connecting with others, I have been drawing, creating, and designing my whole life. Previously focusing on detailed portraits and landscapes in pencil and charcoal, I am now drawn to the visual experience of resin art.
Before I even got into Instagram, I stumbled upon a resin painting online and was amazed by its ability to not only embody the earth from above, but also express such a sense of wonder. I was instantly captivated and that same day I ordered all the supplies – I needed to give it a try. Not having a clue how to work with such a unique medium, I simply began playing with it. After about a year of trial and error, and lots of sweat, tears, and smiles, I was able to fully define my style.
HOW DID YOU DEVELOP YOUR OWN PERSONAL STYLE OF PAINTING?
By fully expressing myself, I am able to create my own personal style of painting. I do not sketch out paintings or pre-plan, but rather I have an idea in mind, select the palette that connects with me, and begin creating. I guide the piece and the piece guides me.
Using acrylics and resin on wood panel, I build up each piece one layer at a time, carefully controlling the flow of the resin, while allowing it to settle on its own. Always discovering new techniques to work with allows me to explore my thoughts without constraint and find peace and beauty in the unknown.
Although I find inspiration through other artwork, I never try to copy it. Each painting is an expression of my own emotions and my environment. Inspired by nature and the sea, I depict the beauty of Hawaii through dynamic colors, fluid movements, and organic compositions. Each original painting is completely unique and full of depth. As light reflects off the glassy surface of the resin, the complexities of the multi-layers are revealed, conveying a sense of wonder – the same sense of wonder I feel when reflecting on the world.
DO YOU EVER EXPERIENCE CREATOR’S BLOCK? HOW DO YOU OVERCOME IT?
I think every artist experiences creative blocks at times! When I am feeling that block, rather than try to force paintings that I most likely won’t end up liking, I step away from the studio. As an artist, I have the constant urge to always create, even through the night and on the weekends. I believe an artist’s block is a way for our mind, body, and spirit telling us we need a break.
At first those blocks would frustrate and upset me, but now I welcome them as an opportunity to be forced to put down my paint and get outside. A breath of fresh air, the warmth of the sun, and the coolness of the ocean refresh my soul. Sometimes these blocks will last for a few hours and sometimes they can last a few weeks, but I always know once I feel ready to get back into my studio, I will create even more beautiful paintings!
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO IN YOUR FREE TIME?
When I am not painting, you can find me swimming or surfing in the crisp clear ocean, practicing yoga under the warm sun on a sandy beach, or hiking through the jungle in search of hidden waterfalls. The world is such an amazing place and I hope to soak up as much of it as I can!
I am in constant awe of the unique beauty of Hawaii, which is expressed through my art. I hope to inspire others to live in the present, enjoy the beauty of everyday life, and live aloha!
WHO IS YOUR DREAM COLLABORATION?
There are so many possibilities for collaborations! Because I am so inspired by the nature and the sea, it would be awesome to work with a sustainable organization to raise awareness about the environment. My dream is to share my art with the world to make it a better place and I look forward to future opportunities to do so!
